Crescent Island, the crescent moon in Lake Naivasha

I start this new page of the blog letting you discover a hidden gem of Kenya, not well known but a must see: Crescent Island. We discovered this small paradise by chance during our honeymoon and from that moment we fell in love with it.

This small island is located in Lake Naivasha and is famous because of hippos and lake eagles. In 1984, while filming "Out of Africa", because of its marvelous landscape, this island was choosen as perfect location to shoot parts of the film. In this occasion zebras, wildbeast, giraffes were relocated to the island where they still enjoy in serenity since there are no predators.

To reach the island, you'll have to pass through the sanctuary farm of Linda and her family . Right from the main gate, you will encounter some of the wild animals quietly chewing the fresh green grass. After crossing a bridge you'll enter in the gate of the island where you can take a walk along the banks of the lake. In this way we entered into the savana: first under the bush of acacias, then the bare plateau with yellow grass due to dry season. We saw several zebras, giraffes and gazzelles all with young ones. Though the animals are used to people, they ran away as we got closer and some of our friends took the oportunity to enjoy the experience chasing after them. At the end of the walk (almost two hoursl later) we arrived at the view point: after a short climb (for me difficult) we arrived on top a hill where we admired the breathtaking landscape. Bishop Camisasca once said that the beauty is the companionship that God made for our life. Visiting this place I couldn't agree more.

Suggestions:

Timing: the morning hours are the the best because of high sun exposure.
Checklist: hat/bandana, water, snacks, camera, sun protection, comfortable shoes.
Children's activities: walking (it is possible to use the prawn), open air painting (landskape and animals are just amazing and will push your little one's creativity), travelling diary (why not collect flowers, look for tracks and ask questions to the experienced guides who are always available guides. You can record everything on a personal notebook, carry it with you during your adventures!)
