Brooklyn: my review

Rarely do I get moved by movies; today was different. Since when Giovanni was born I have done a movie’s full immersion because of he decided that my arms were better than the bed. So you can image how many movies I watched in the past six months. Most of the time, my criteria for choosing movies is: language (of course I prefer Italian) or how the cover looks like. I leave a lot of space to chance and sometimes I’m lucky, sometimes less.

Today I was very lucky! I watched this recent movie called “Brooklyn”; I can say it was one of the best movies I have ever watched. The plot is simple: an Irish young lady moves to New York in the 50s or maybe 60s, looking for a better life. She gets there, everything is strange, feels home sick and then this guy arrives (Italian, that makes him very nice to me) and she starts a relationship. Some news takes the protagonist back home without her love Tony. In Ireland she rediscovers her old life and sees it under a new light. This challenges her very much and starts an interior fight for her feelings. I stop here otherwise you don’t watch the movie.

Why did I like it so much? Mostly I think corresponds to my own story. Watching this movie you can feel, for some aspects, the same feeling of the protagonist: the homesickness and then the beginning of a new life. The protagonist is not a fragile lady overcomed by emotions but a strong woman who is looking for who she is and building her own identity despite the difficulties of the environment.

All of us who live abroad feel like they have a half life here and a half there and it’s important to find something that calls you back to one place or the other

Then of course the love story is beautiful because is genuine and simple. Finally a couple where the two people know each other in the real life and not just under the sheets. Tony, the Italian-American, is a simple and tender man (very rare to find in a movie) who is able to break the cold ice eyes of this Irish lady.

So don't wait and wach it and let me know!
